Fans have been nagging Peter Filby to reprint Success Against the Odds for years, but he has gone one better by issuing this bigger, better rewrite. Volume One covers the brand’s inception in the ’40s to its collapse in ’65, with Volume Two – the Lilley era – promised later this year. Further editions will cover competition, success under Peter Wheeler and TVR’s demise. It’ll be an expensive set, but, on this evidence, worth it.
Described in depth as never before, the story of TVR’s birth and great struggle to become established during the 1950s and early 1960s is not only extraordinary but also totally absorbing and entertaining. Indeed, it’s probably the most amazing specialist sports car story of them all.
Many big personalities and eccentric characters were drawn into the TVR scenario, and the consequence was an almost relentless series of incidents and events. These generally developed into humorous anecdotes, liberal helpings of which Peter has included in his new book. No TVR history would be complete without its fair share of wicked humour!
