When Eugen Böhringer started in the 1963 Marathon de la Route – 4 days and 4 nights of uninterrupted driving, apart from a 1-hour break – he took a big gamble, opting for Mercedes’ new, unproven SL. But Böhringer proved right in his thinking that the more nimble 230 SL would give him a competitive advantage in the hairpins in the Alps. And that’s just the beginning of this story.
- DTM Opel Astra V8 wins Nürburgring 24 Hours. When Opel Motorsport boss Volker Strycek hinted to management that the DTM Astra V8 – a pure sprinter’s car – could be the winning ticket for the gruesome 2003 Nürburgring 24 Hours, he was told to leave the room. Strycek proved everyone wrong, and he wasn’t just content with masterminding proceedings from the pit wall, but he was part of the drivers’ crew as well.
- If it had four wheels and an engine, you could bet Dan Gurney was in with a shot of victory. In his nine starts in the NASCAR race at Riverside, Gurney won five times. Frustratingly so for his rivals, the race became known as the ‘Gurney 500’.
- Peter Stevens reminds us of the day he phoned Bernie Ecclestone with a plan for a new livery for the Brabham F1s. The answer came quick: ‘Can you start tomorrow?’. Some legendary liveries followed.
